Evaluation of web graphics
ESPN UK
Purpose of graphics on site
The graphics on ESPN UK are used to give visual previews of articles or videos on the home page and to illustrate content articles.
Effectiveness of graphics on site
ESPN UK is not as graphically intensive as some other sites, and while there are many areas of contrasting color on the page, those are mostly done with CSS. Pictures for linked articles are small, while images for main articles are much larger and usually are no more than one per article. Alt-text is used in links from Outbrain, but linked articles from ESPN UK itself do not have alt-text, nor do the main pictures. However, as most of the images illustrate the text-based content and do not usually convey information themselves, there is no appreciable loss of information without the graphics. Generally, the graphics are effective and non-intrusive, and web users without graphics are still able to use the site effectively.
Graphic file types
For images 1, 4 and 5 on the relevant WebD2 lesson, GIF works best as the images require few colors and will thus benefit from palettization, though PNG is an option if we are requiring modern browsers. Images 2 and 3 are photographs, and so should be encoded in JPEG format.
